  • “When is it enough?”

“On the evening of May 24th, after learning about the massacre that took place earlier that day at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, I sat down and wrote this song, ‘Watershed.’” – Matthew David Morris

    About Matthew David Morris

    “Watershed” by Matthew David Morris

    How many kids must die
    under a blaze of fire
    before we change our mind
    about our sacred rights?

    Another 3 or 4?
    Maybe a dozen more?
    Is someone keeping score?
    I can’t tell anymore.

    How many thoughts and prayers
    will we pretend to share?

Is it enough, enough, enough, enough
    for a watershed?
Is it enough, enough, enough, enough
    for a watershed?

    How many teenage sons
    will steal their daddy’s guns
    and make a grocery run
all in the name of fun?

    How many talking heads
    will disregard the dead
    and sell their souls instead
    to make a little bread?

    Who will be sacrificed
    to keep them satisfied?

Is it enough, enough, enough, enough
    for a watershed?
Is it enough, enough, enough, enough
    for a watershed?

    People on both sides
    create the perfect lines
    to shoot the other down.
    But in the meantime
    someone’s standing in line
to buy us all the next round.

When is it enough, enough, enough, enough
    for a watershed?
Is it enough, enough, enough, enough
    for a watershed?

    Is it enough, enough
    for a watershed?

Matthew David Morris is a songwriter, artist, and priest whose music has been recorded by some of the world’s most renown artists. His 2018 podcast, Lectio Musica, blended together the rhythms of liturgy and a passion for songwriting. His online ministries have sought to create meaningful spaces for meaningful connection, vulnerability, and authenticity.
He is an artist, a cultivator of good questions, and a lover of the human heart. His writing inspires questions, cultivates the imagination, and fosters a sense of community and belonging. That is what Heartsong is created to do.
“As a songwriter, I’ve always sought to help others connect to their heart. As a priest, I’ve wanted to do the same thing, but also to help folks realize that beneath the trappings of institutional religion is something true and honest… something beautiful and artistic… something musical.
A spiritual life is an imaginative life. My hope for Heartsong is to use this space to help others (and myself, if I’m honest) cultivate an imagination that sings forth from the heart.
I hope you bring forth your imagination with me.”
