Day 17. Autumn Peltier: A Fearless Water Activist Advocating for Indigenous Water Rights.
At the age of 13, Autumn Peltier became a prominent voice in the fight for Indigenous water rights, drawing attention to the critical issue of clean water access for Indigenous communities in Canada. Her advocacy has not only highlighted the urgent need for action but has also empowered others to join the movement for environmental justice and Indigenous rights. As we continue our “30 Days of Celebrating Youth: Explorers & Innovators” series, we honor Autumn Peltier for her leadership, her passion, and her commitment to protecting water resources.
A Deep Connection to Water
Autumn Peltier’s journey into water activism began with her deep cultural and personal connection to water. Growing up in the Wikwemikong First Nation on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada, Autumn learned about the significance of water in her Indigenous heritage. Water is considered sacred in many Indigenous cultures, and its protection is viewed as a fundamental responsibility.
At a young age, Autumn became aware of the challenges faced by many Indigenous communities regarding access to clean and safe drinking water. This realization spurred her into action, motivated by a desire to address the injustices and inequalities affecting her community and others like it.
A Voice for Change
Autumn’s activism gained national and international attention when she began speaking out about the water crisis facing Indigenous communities. At just 13 years old, she addressed the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, delivering a powerful speech that called for global action to address water contamination and ensure access to clean water for all. Her impassioned plea emphasized the connection between water and the well-being of Indigenous communities, and it underscored the importance of respecting Indigenous rights and traditions.
In addition to her work at the UN, Autumn has participated in various environmental and Indigenous rights events, advocating for water protection and raising awareness about the issues facing her community. Her efforts have included organizing and participating in rallies, speaking engagements, and educational campaigns focused on the importance of clean water and the protection of water sources.

Autumn Peltier’s work has garnered significant recognition and support. She has been honored with numerous awards and accolades for her activism, including being named one of the BBC’s 100 Women of 2019. Her advocacy has brought increased attention to the water crisis in Indigenous communities and has helped to galvanize support for efforts to address this pressing issue.
