Day 19. Bana Alabed: Documenting the Syrian Civil War Through the Eyes of a Child.

At just 7 years old, Bana Alabed captured the world’s attention by documenting the harrowing experiences of living through the Syrian Civil War. Through her poignant tweets, Bana offered a child’s perspective on the horrors of war, giving a voice to those who were often unheard. As we continue our “30 Days of Celebrating Youth: Explorers & Innovators” series, we honor Bana Alabed for her bravery, her resilience, and her impact on raising global awareness of the Syrian conflict.

A Voice Amidst the Chaos
Bana Alabed was born in Aleppo, Syria, in 2009, just two years before the Syrian Civil War began. As the conflict escalated, Aleppo became one of the most dangerous places in the world. By the time she was 7, Bana’s home had become a war zone, and she and her family were living in constant fear.

In the midst of this turmoil, Bana’s mother, Fatemah, began using Twitter to share their daily struggles and the devastation they witnessed. With Bana’s help, they tweeted about the bombings, the destruction of their neighborhood, and the impact of the war on children. Bana’s simple, yet powerful messages quickly spread, resonating with people around the world who were moved by the human side of the conflict.

A Child’s Perspective on War
Bana’s tweets offered a unique and heartbreaking glimpse into the reality of life in a war-torn city. She tweeted about her longing for peace, her fears of the bombings, and her wishes for a normal childhood. Her words were a stark reminder of the human cost of war, particularly on children who are often the most vulnerable.

As the situation in Aleppo worsened, Bana continued to tweet, despite the growing dangers. Her messages became a lifeline for those who followed her, offering real-time updates on the conditions in the city and the plight of its residents. Bana’s bravery in sharing her story, even in the face of immense danger, inspired many and brought attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria.

Global Recognition and Impact
Bana Alabed’s tweets quickly gained international attention, with journalists, activists, and public figures amplifying her voice. Her account became a symbol of the suffering endured by Syrian civilians, particularly children, during the conflict. Through her tweets, Bana was able to humanize the war, reminding the world that behind every statistic was a person, a family, a child.

In December 2016, Bana and her family were evacuated from Aleppo, escaping the violence that had engulfed their city. They eventually resettled in Turkey, where Bana has continued her advocacy work. She has since published a memoir titled Dear World: A Syrian Girl’s Story of War and Plea for Peace, in which she recounts her experiences during the war and calls for an end to the violence.
