Day 2. Gitanjali Rao: The Inventor Who Took on the Water Crisis.

In a world where the consequences of environmental neglect can seem overwhelming, 11-year-old Gitanjali Rao emerged as a beacon of hope. Driven by a desire to address the Flint water crisis, Gitanjali invented a groundbreaking device to detect lead in water, demonstrating that innovation knows no age. As we continue our “30 Days of Celebrating Youth: Explorers & Innovators” series, we are thrilled to highlight Gitanjali’s remarkable achievement and the impact of her work in promoting public health and safety.

Inspiration from Crisis Gitanjali’s journey began when she was just 10 years old, watching the news about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Like many of us, she was shocked and saddened by the situation, but she didn’t stop at empathy. She felt compelled to do something to help. With a passion for science and technology, Gitanjali began researching the issue of lead contamination and quickly realized that existing methods for detecting lead in water were expensive, time-consuming, and often inaccessible to the general public.

Gitanjali set out to create a solution that would be faster, cheaper, and easier to use—a device that could empower individuals to test their own water and ensure its safety.

The Birth of Tethys
After months of research, experimentation, and development, Gitanjali invented “Tethys,” a portable device named after the Greek goddess of fresh water. The device uses carbon nanotubes to detect lead particles in water and is connected to a mobile app via Bluetooth, which provides immediate results. This innovation allows users to quickly test their water at home, making lead detection more accessible and enabling communities to respond to contamination more effectively.

Gitanjali’s work earned her the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” in the 2017 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, where she gained recognition for her ingenuity and commitment to solving a critical issue affecting public health.

Beyond Invention: Advocacy and Empowerment
Gitanjali’s contributions extend far beyond her invention. As a young scientist and innovator, she has become a powerful advocate for youth involvement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). She has spoken at numerous conferences, including TEDx, and has been featured in TIME magazine, where she was named the first-ever “Kid of the Year” in 2020.

Gitanjali’s message is clear: young people have the power to change the world, and their voices deserve to be heard. She has dedicated herself to mentoring other young innovators, leading workshops, and encouraging her peers to pursue their own ideas and solutions to global challenges. Her advocacy underscores the importance of diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, emphasizing that innovation thrives when we empower people of all backgrounds to contribute their unique perspectives.

A Unitarian Universalist Perspective
Gitanjali Rao’s story is a profound example of our respect for the interdependent web of all existence. Her invention not only addresses an immediate environmental and public health crisis, but also reflects a deep commitment to the well-being of others. Gitanjali’s work embodies the belief in the power of individual action to make a positive difference in the world.

Her journey also resonates with our commitment to justice, equity, and compassion in human relations. By creating a tool that empowers communities, Gitanjali has taken a significant step toward addressing social and environmental injustices that disproportionately affect marginalized populations.

Inspiration for the Future
Gitanjali Rao’s story is a testament to the potential that lies within every young person—a potential that, when nurtured, can lead to transformative change. Her invention, Tethys, is more than just a technological achievement; it is a symbol of hope, resilience, and the belief that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome with creativity and determination.

As we celebrate Gitanjali’s achievements, we are reminded of the importance of supporting the next generation of innovators and activists. By providing them with the tools, resources, and encouragement they need, we can help them realize their potential and contribute to a more just, compassionate, and sustainable world.

Let Gitanjali’s story inspire us all to take action in our own lives, to support the youth in our communities, and to believe in the power of young minds to create a brighter future.
