Immigrant Justice Action Needed: 2017 Immigrant Day Outcome #ImmDay17

The Reverend Dr. Betty Stapleford speaks at the 2017 Immigrant Day in Sacramento. News reports estimated one thousand people gathered to rally and meet with our legislators.

Pictured at right is Assemblyman Mike A. Gipson, 64th District, who signed on as co-author of SB29 during his meeting with immigrant justice activists.  The work is not over.  The bills have passed the Senate.  The vote on the Assembly floor is expected the first week of June.  Many moderates will be influential in the outcome.

SB54—The California Values Act–would end local law enforcement entanglement with ICE.  Limits immigration enforcement on premises of sensitive locations, including schools, hospitals, clinics and courthouses.

SB29—Dignity Not Detention Act–would private right of action for immigrants who have faced abuse or neglect in detention; prohibits local governments from contracting with private companies to detain immigrants for profit in California.

Immigrant Budget Package—One California and Due Process–continues investment in services that ensure immigrants know their rights, access affirmative remedies or citizenship; ensures due process for low income Californians who face deportation proceedings.
