Put your faith into action for climate justice TODAY – help us bring an end to California’s dependence on oil!
UUJMCA is participating in today’s “Stand up to Big Oil at 2020 CA State of the State,” organized by Last Chance Alliance. Why are we in Sacramento today?
From Last Chance Alliance:
“Despite its reputation as a climate leader, California has an oil problem. As one of the largest oil-producing economies, our Governor Gavin Newsom also has an opportunity to set an example of transformative climate leadership for the world by phasing out of fossil fuel production and beginning a just transition to a clean energy economy. That opportunity starts on February 19, 2020 as Governor Newsom delivers his second State of the State speech in Sacramento and sets the tone for the next decade of climate action in California. Governor Newsom has an opportunity to stand up to an oil industry that—for decades—has polluted Californian communities and destroyed our climate future. Join the Last Chance Alliance as we rally to urge Newsom to phase out oil extraction in California.
Climate and environmental justice activists from around the region are rallying in Sacramento TODAY outside the State of the State in support of transformative climate action. The Last Chance Alliance, an alliance of over 750 organizations around the world, is calling on Governor Newsom to address the following three actions in his State of the State address:
1.) Stop new fossil fuel projects: Lead by issuing no new permits for oil and gas extraction, fossil fuel infrastructure, or petrochemical projects in California.
2.) Drop existing oil production: Set a national and global precedent by becoming the first oil- producing state to announce a phase-out of existing production in line with the Paris climate goals, with a just and equitable transition that protects workers, communities and economies.
3.) Roll out setback limits: Begin by first phasing out oil production in places that are suffering most from the impacts of fossil fuel extraction — by creating a 2,500-foot health-and-safety buffer zone between fossil-fuel infrastructure and homes, schools and other sensitive sites.”
Add your voice to the chorus in Sacramento today by helping us take over the #CASOTS hashtag on social media with the above action demands!
Last Chance Alliance is asking everyone across the state to post a message to the governor on social media to show the mass support for bold climate action. The more we can take over the #CASOTS hashtag, the more journalists and staff tracking the conversations online will see our demands.
Be a part of the movement urging our Governor to take transformative climate action to phase out fossil fuel production that fuels the climate crisis. Post on Twitter & Facebook, tag Governor Newsom and your local/state representatives, and help us get big oil out of California!
