“Baby Roe” speaks out

SCOTUS could release the ruling that will overturn “Roe v. Wade” any day now. The “draft opinion” by Justice Alito was leaked to Politico in early May. The country has already started to react to what may come. Many of us are bracing ourselves, and hoping …. This hope reminds me of the hope I held onto while the election returns came in on the night of November 8th in 2016. As my hope dwindled, it turned to begging, begging for a miracle to turn the numbers around. The past six weeks feel similar to me. For those who are preparing for the worst and feeling deeply troubled, and anxious about Justice denied one more time, you are not alone, not at all.

Norma Leah Nelson McCorvey (Jane Roe) was facing her third pregnancy in 1969. She had given birth to two prior children who given up for adoption. She was seeking to abort her third pregnancy and could not get a safe and legal abortion in Texas. Attorneys Linda Coffee and Sarah Weddington were looking for women who were seeking abortions with the intent to take an abortion case to the Supreme Court of the United States. Norma McCorvy fit the bill and the case moved on under the pseudonym, Jane Roe. She never actually attended a single day of the trial called “Roe v. Wade”. It took three years for the case to go from filing, then up to the Supreme Court of the United States. Since she was seeking an abortion when she filed, but unable to obtain one, she gave birth to “Baby Roe”, who was then adopted.
